William Baker

William Baker is one of five neighbourhoods surrounding Downsview Park in Toronto.

The mature woodlot is at the heart of the neighbourhood, creating a quiet spot for people to enjoy nature in the city. The opportunities for the community include housing, services and a range of other uses to serve new residents as well as those who already live nearby.

The process for planning the William Baker neighbourhood is underway. The first phase of public consultation took place in the spring and summer of 2019 and followed a series of conversations with the community and local elected officials. During the first phase, Canada Lands hosted a number of events to share information, seek ideas, aspirations and additional feedback to inform the District Plan for the new William Baker Neighbourhood. The second phase of community consultation took place in fall 2019/winter 2020 to share information and seek feedback on early design options for the new neighbourhood. Canada Lands is eager to continue working with the community throughout the planning process. In addition, the Company will be working with a wide range of stakeholders, including the City of Toronto, ecologists, urban planners, engineers, transportation experts, social service providers and builders to ensure the neighbourhood is well designed and effectively meets the needs of the community.

Canada Lands anticipates it will take two to three years to prepare the plan and complete the approvals process with the City of Toronto. Construction is expected to begin in 2022/23.

Property Update

Beginning Monday, September 21, 2020, and as a part of our ongoing planning work on the future William Baker Neighbourhood, we will be conducting soil testing within the William Baker property. This work will take place in various areas across the site. Canada Lands is paying close attention to the evolving situation with COVID-19. Following directives and recommendations from public health officials is Canada Lands’ top priority and as such any and all future consultation will follow public health recommendations to prioritize collective well-being. Canada Lands will continue to share information and ensure community members have an opportunity to share feedback in a safe and responsible manner.

Canada Lands would like to thank everyone who participated in Phase Two of the William Baker Neighbourhood public consultation. The Phase Two Community Feedback Report is now complete and can be viewed and downloaded on the William Baker project website. The report summarizes feedback received during the second phase of consultation for the District Plan process, which took place in late 2019 and early 2020.

During the Phase Two consultations, we received a number of important questions related to the District Plan process. Canada Lands has compiled the responses and provided Bulletins on the topics of: Planning a Neighbourhood and District Plan; Retail/Service Commercial Uses; and Seniors. The Bulletins can be viewed and downloaded from the project website on the Phase Two Consultation page. Additional Bulletins will be posted to the project website as they become available.
